Churchill Offers Tours for Everyone in Every Season:

Churchill Wilderness Adventures
BELUGA WHALE - PRINCE OF WALES' FORT
The beluga whale tour is a combination whale/fort tour that includes a visit to the 18th century Hudson Bay Company fort located on the west bank of the Churchill River and Sloop's Cove (when possible). Then we are off to view, photograph and listen to the songs of the beluga whales in their summering range in the Churchill River. Our estuary boasts of more than 2,000 belugas during July and August. Polar bears have been occasionally encountered on these tours.
For the whale enthusiast we also offer a six-day inclusive package focussing on the beluga whales, flora and fauna of Churchill. This specialized tour is only offered for a limited time during the short summer season. These "sea canaries" are part of the bountiful western Hudson Bay population of beluga whales that is both healthy and readily approachable.
NATURE TOURS
As we make our first stop along the coastal road we will visit the glaciated Precambrian shield and tundra which presents unique photo opportunities. Later you may dip your feet into the taiga to the boreal forest. Upon conclusion of this tour you will have had a comprehensive look at the sub-Arctic flora and fauna of Churchill.
BUS TOURS
This half-day tour includes an indepth look into the history of the grain terminal. A short drive takes you into the past at Cape Merry National Site. We continue to the remnants of the military base at Fort Churchill, past the Polar Bear jail along the launch road toward the rocket range. Upon completion of this tour you will be familiar with the rich and varied history of Churchill on Hudson Bay.
BIRDING TOURS
Churchill is one of the great destinations for the birding enthusiast. These tours are offered daily throughout the spring and summer. Areas visited will vary depending upon the current location of species sought by those on tour.
Some of the unique species which may be seem include: Ross's Gull, Smiths, Longspur, Parasitic Jaeger, Hoary Redpoll, Willow Ptarmigan and Pacific Loon.
The exclusive six-day tour packages are offered during the month of June. At this time you can expect to see approximately 100 species. Many are passing through the sub-Arctic on their way to their Arctic nesting grounds.
Birding tours are conducted by Bonne Chartier, local author of the ABA/Lane, "A Birder's Guide to Churchill" and recipient of the 1995 Manitoba Business Woman of the Year Award.

Nature 1st Tours & Transportation

Churchill has the interesting distinction of being located in the sub-arctic, a transition zone between the tree-line and the barren lands.  Within a 25 Km. radius there are 4 different ecosystems, and all of the diverse flora & fauna that goes with each.  In one day you can travel from Northern Boreal Forest, through Taiga, and on to treeless Tundra which borders on a Marine environment.
We specialize in walking tours or drive-a-little/walk-a-little tours that get you out of town and on the ground.  Customize a tour to suit your interests.  Go many places or explore one area in detail.  Spend a half day or a full day with an experienced and professional local naturalist who will focus on any or all of the following:
• Boreal Forest and the tree-line                   *   Birding
• Denning areas of Arctic & Red Fox            *   Geology/Fossils
• Hudson Bay Coast (tidal & marine areas)   *   Taiga/Tundra
• Wildflowers                                              *   Fall Colors
• History & Culture of the area

Wildlife is where you find it, and there is a possibility to observe Arctic Hare, Arctic Fox, Red Fox and other color phases, Beluga Whales, Cape Churchill Caribou, up to 200 different species of birds, including the elusive Ross’s Gull, and Polar Bears.
All guides are full trained in the use of deterrents, firearms and safety in Polar Bear country and are in radio contact with Churchill at all times.

Floe Ice Tour (ice break up varies but usually occurs around the second week of June).  Travel by tour boat among the beautiful ice formations.  See a wide range of bird species - gulls, jaegers, ducks, mergansers, loons, etc.  This tour is very popular with birder groups.  Normally there are a lot of seals at this time of year.  Time:  2 - 2 1/2 hours
Belugas & Fort Tour (July and August)
Travel to Prince of Wales Fort and take a guided tour.  Watch the beautiful beluga whales which are present in abundance and swim within feet of our tour boats which are hydrophone equipped to listen to the belugas, the most vocal whales in the world.  Polar bear viewing by boat (mid to late summer) can offer an excellent photographic opportunity.  They may be found swimming or on coastal rocks and beaches.  Time:  3 hours
Charters
Sea North Tours has five to nine passenger Zodiacs available for charter.  Charter interests might include:  diving, snorkeling, additional whale watching or looking for birds, seals and polar bears in season.  Charters are popular with the serious photographer.  Go kayaking accompanied by a zodiac for added safety.  One and two passenger kayaks available.
All tours and charters, including the use of hydrophones are weather dependent.  We have a high success rate in viewing these friendly whales, however no wildlife viewing can be guaranteed.

Wapusk Adventures & Blue Sky Expeditions

Wapusk Adventures (Dave Daley) and Blue Sky Expeditions (Gerald Azure), are two licensed outfitters/guides with extensive outdoor experience in Northern Manitoba.   They are also the recipients of the 2005 Aboriginal Tourism Awards for Travel Manitoba.
Tours can be booked by calling:
Wapusk General Store
(204) 675-2887
Half day tours leave daily at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm from the Wapusk General Store.  Reservations in advance are strongly recommended.
Dog teams have historically played a prominent role in all Northern Manitoba aboriginal cultures as one of the main modes of transportation. Dave Daley and Gerald Azure were raised in communities which relied on dog teams as a form of transportation, and as adults, they ran small dog teams for recreational purposes.  They are also the organizers of the most challenging dog sled race between Churchill and Nunavut – the Annual Hudson Bay Quest (hudsonbayquest.ca).  Their love for their dogs, commitment to responsible dog care and retention of dog sledding as an important part of their cultural heritage takes tourists on a step back in time as they capture the Northern Spirit via dog team. Tourists visiting Churchill to view polar bears have often commented that their dog sledding adventure was an unexpected highlight of their trip.

The Eskimo Museum is centrally located in the town of Churchill and is an easy walking distance from any of Churchill's motels. It is a museum of Inuit and Arctic artifacts including a large collection of Inuit carvings. Plan on spending at least an hour or two in the museum.

The Eskimo Museum is dedicated to advancing knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of Northern culture and history with an emphasis on the Canadian Inuit. The exhibits include historic and contemporary sculptures of stone, bone, and ivory, as well as archaeological and wildlife specimens.

The museum had its origins in 1944 when Roman Catholic missionaries from the order of the oblates of Mary Immaculate recognized the value of preserving "carvings" representative of the culture of the people in the North. The museum pays tribute to the living creativity of the Inuit. Their creations constitute an invitation for us to deepen our vision of humanity and to enrich our communion with the mysterious and irrestible destiny that creates peoples, cultures and civilizations.
